Selected works from New Zealand-based artist on tumblr EmilianoP.
UE: How would you describe your art?
E: I’d say it’s a bit hard to consider my work as art, it lacks some fundamental trait that I associate with art itself. Art is about total freedom of expression while I just figuratively represent situations I happen to think about. I draw tangible objects, people, animals, I couldn’t chose to represent their concepts in other forms, so I’m not free. What I do is more similar to craftsmanship.
UE: Describe your process?
E: It usually starts with mentally picturing scenes or settings. It could be a sentence or an image or a situation. From there I operate by synthesis, trying to distill what main point of focus or flavour for the whole work might be. I like to imagine there’s a story behind most of them and I’m just grasping a frame in the whole sequence. It might pass some time before I put this onto paper, then, when I think it’s fine and I have it clear enough in my head, I just go with the usual means I guess: pencil on paper, a bit of watery shades to do the blocking, then inking.
UE: Who are you?
E: I’m EmilianoP, I was born in Italy, wandered around the world and now living in Wellington, New Zealand. My main job revolves around the movie industry, I work on special FX for films. Because I spend so much time in front of a computer, drawing is some sort of getaway ticket for me.
UE: What/Who is your inspiration?
E: A partial list, in no particular order: Jan Vermeer, Lucien Freud, Edvard Munch, Giovanni Fattori, Giacomo Balla, Marcel Duchamp, Albrecht Durer, J.L. Borges, Jose Saramago, Italo Calvino, Stanley Kubrick, Akira Kurosawa, Sergio Toppi, Dino Battaglia, Hugo Pratt, Moebius, Katsuhiro Otomo, Craig Mullins, Radiohead… for sure I’m forgetting someone.
